Too young to be away from mom and the litter but they were nowhere to be found!

Our first photo

Sometimes fate just finds us. I was at Shooters Sports Bar in San Jose del Cabo on a Friday night when I first saw the little lover. She was being offered for sale by a local car washer who has been known to find/steal dogs and sell them. Walking table to table he would present her. A local ex-pat Canadian couple expressed interest and asked for her to be taken out of the bucket. As he put her down it became obvious that her right hind leg was badly damaged. She struggled to put any of the little weight she had on it. They politely declined to negotiate further.

Next thing I see, he grabs her by the scruff of her neck before slamming her back into the bucket. He almost made it out the door with his bicycle by the time I reached him. Grabbing his handlebars I tell him that it is my dog now.

“50 pesos” I offer

“I want 100” he spits back

She was so flea-riddled and terrified that she tried to bury her face in the basket to hide.

Not wanting to encourage this type of enterprise I was torn but in my mind, he was tossing her in the river on the way home. That was out of the question.

This is the first picture we took together on our way to the nearby vet. She underwent immediate X-rays were it was confirmed her femur was fractured. The vet estimated that she was maybe three weeks old and that her bones were still very pliable.

Looks like a lot of love is needed.

My new best friend, Shooter.
