My mother-in-law, Alma Angelica Orduña, is a national treasure. There is simply no debate. In addition to being one of the best cooks I have ever met, her heart knows no bounds.
Mercado Organico in San Jose del Cabo
Each Saturday at the Mercado Organico (Organic Market) in San Jose del Cabo, she and my father-in-law, Bernardo Villa, share their primary love language with the world at their booth, El Rinconcito (The little corner). There they serve the most amazing tamales, chilaquiles, and pozole. It was seven years ago that I first visited their pop-up restaurant and fell in love with their daughter, Angie. Since that time I have probably gained fifteen pounds from over-indulging her cooking but trust me, every pound has been worth it.
As the saying goes, “A los hombres se le conquista por el estómago.”
The secret is out
This past weekend they were interviewed at their booth by local internet station Radio Diferente. I still can’t believe it but they discussed some of their “secret” menu items including tortas de tamal and tortas de chilaquiles. These are sandwiches and soft bread stuffed with either tamales or chilaquiles and should be illegal they are so good. I thought that I was the only one that knew. Apparently the secret is out!
Next time you go to the Mercado Organico from 9 AM to 3 PM during high season on Saturdays do not miss the opportunity to sample their food. One bite and you will be HOOKED! I know that I was.
Please enjoy the interview. It is in Spanish because, well, we live in Mexico!
